Nevada Gun Laws

Owning and carrying a firearm comes with immense responsibility and being well versed in Nevada gun laws and the proper handling and storage of your firearms. In addition, if you ever are involved in a self defense situation where you use your firearm, you will be subject to criminal and civil liability. We strongly encourage all CCW permit holders to obtain criminal defense and civil liability insurance of at least $1,000,000 (we do not recommend any specific insurance companies).

CONCEALED FIREARM DEFINED

NRS 202.3653 – a loaded or unloaded handgun which is carried upon a person in such a manner as not to be discernible by ordinary observation, this includes in a carried bag/purse (link for more information).

OPEN CARRY OF FIREARMS
Nevada law does not specifically prohibit the open carry of handguns.

Concealed Carry of Firearms

Nevada allows a person to carry a handgun concealed/hidden on their person. A concealed carry weapon (CCW) permit is required.

Carry in Vehicles

Loaded revolvers and pistols may be transported inside a vehicle. However, if the handgun is concealed on the person, a CCW permit is required.

State Pre-emption Law

Nevada has state laws (called “pre-emption laws”) that prohibit counties and municipalities from enacting firearms laws (except with regard to the discharge of firearms). Specifically, NRS 244.364, NRS 268.418, and NRS 269.222.

Nevada Residents

Residents of the state of Nevada MUST obtain a Nevada CCW. No exceptions. NV Residents may not use an out-of-state CCW permit to conceal carry in Nevada. Out-of-State CCW permits are only valid for persons visiting Nevada. New residents have 60 days to obtain their Nevada CCW permit. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Out-of-State Residents

Non-residents may obtain a Nevada CCW permit. The process is identical as if you are a resident. Keep in mind that when you are physically in Nevada, you are bound by Nevada state gun laws which may be different than your home state.

Firearms Prohibited

Even if you have a CCW permit, the following locations in Nevada do not allow you to carry a gun:

  • Any building owned or used by the federal government (including post offices, military bases, courthouses, buildings in National Parks). You may carry a gun on the grounds of a National Park as long as you can legally carry a gun within the state where the National Park is located – however, you may not carry a gun inside buildings in National Parks.

  • Inside a public or private child care facility.

Signs stating “no guns” on private property have no legal force. If a property owners demands that you leave the property and you refuse, you may be arrested for trespass. Always obey a property owner’s restrictions.

Casinos and Bars

There are no state laws that prohibit concealed carry of guns in casinos and bars. However, it is illegal to carry a firearm with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08+

Gun Registration and Blue Cards

Nevada has abolished handgun registration and so-called blue cards.

CCW Permit Specific Guns
